Spring Into Better Health - Avoid Allergies This Spring
What’s your favourite thing about Spring?
The flowers start to come back to life, the grass goes back to green, the snow melts and the rivers all run free, and then there’s Spring cleaning! Hooray!
Personally, I like Spring cleaning. There’s nothing better than cleaning your space and setting it up just the way you like it - fresh, clean, and ready to be enjoyed. For most people that we talk to at VitalitAir, Spring can also be a challenging time.
Spring brings temperature fluctuations, humidity changes, and the big P - POLLEN! Also, for those who do get into some seasonal cleaning, the chemicals from the cleaning products enter the air, sticking to surfaces, causing more irritation and possible allergic reactions.
Thankfully, there are several ways to reduce or even eliminate allergies so you can enjoy the season.
It may not always be possible to avoid pollen altogether, but you can definitely reduce your exposure to it.
Pollen counts tend to be higher in the morning, and high winds will always kick more of it into the air. On rainy days or just after a shower, however, the pollen counts are lower.
So if you can, plan outdoor activities for when the pollen counts are lower. You’ll enjoy the season and avoid the pollen irritation that can come along with it.
As always, we recommend natural, non-chemical cleaners. You probably have a cupboard full of these ‘green’ options already. If you don’t or you do need to use chemicals, ensure that your space is well ventilated.
Also, never mix cleaners together. Especially products like bleach or anything with ammonia (found in many disinfectants). When mixed together, some chemicals can introduce harmful fumes into the air or cause chemical reactions that can be damaging to your health.
For example, bleach and ammonia produce a toxic gas called chloramine. This gas can cause chest pain and shortness of breath. So be careful even if you are using an ammonia product (e.g. most glass cleaners) on a surface where bleach was recently used.
Instead of window or stand-alone fans, use air conditioning whenever possible. Fans can bring quick relief from heat but they’ll also blow dust and pollen into the air and around your space.
It’s also a good idea to avoid opening windows on windy days. That ‘fresh air’ is also carrying pollen into your home. Instead, purify the air in your space or even consider installing an HVAC + purification system for your entire home.
You knew this was coming. An air purifier is the best way to reduce or even eliminate allergies and asthma in the home. As Spring is probably the most challenging time for allergy and asthma sufferers, it’s also the best time to ensure that your filters are clean and operating normally.
If you don’t have an air purifier, it isn’t difficult to find one to suit your needs and your budget.
We have trusted air purifiers for small and large rooms. When it come to air quality concerns, we have air purifiers for allergen removal all the way to multiple chemical sensitivities.
If you have questions, just let us know. We guarantee that you’ll see and feel a difference in the air in your home and your overall health.
Whatever your favourite season is, we hope that you and your family enjoy this one...with good health and freedom from allergies and asthma irritations.
